Voice Lessons

for Children, Teenagers, & Adults

In-Person or Virtually

The goal of voice lessons is to equip students with correct vocal techniques that enable them to sing with understanding, skill, and freedom. Repertoire is chosen that matches the current skill level of the singer. As much as possible I try to allow the student to sing the genre of song they prefer. However, since it is critical that voices never be forced, songs must be within the confines of the student's abilities. Students also learn how to be expressive in their singing.

All students have the opportunity to perform in my two annual studio recitals.

How are payments made?

Payments can be made by personal check or through PayPal or Zelle.

Do you offer discounts for lessons purchased in bulk?

Yes. During the school year (September through the end of May/early June), all my students, except for adults, are on a contract basis. There are 2 semesters for my teaching “year”.

If a parent pays for lessons by the semester, they get a 5% discount on each semester’s payment.

There is also the choice of paying by monthly installments with no fee discount.

How long are lessons?

Parents or adults can choose the length of the lesson time they want for their children or themselves.

For young, beginning piano students I recommend 30 minute lessons.

If desired, the amount of lesson time can be increased as the child becomes accustomed to lessons.

Lessons should be limited to 30 minutes for young voice students. Teenage voice students usually prefer 45 minute lessons, but the student may choose the desired length.

How often are lessons?

For Children and Teenagers, during the contracted school year, I schedule weekly lessons, with the exceptions of Winter and Spring Breaks and some holidays.

When a student is signed-up for lessons, I provide a calendar of scheduled lessons from September through the end of May/early June.

This allows parents to plan in advance and schedule makeup lessons for any dates with conflicts.

Please provide reasonable notice for lessons that will be missed due to sickness, school events, etc.

Occasionally I must reschedule lessons, but I will communicate with you regarding a makeup lesson.

Adults have no contract for study, and are free to take lessons of whatever length whenever they wish. However, they too must give reasonable notice of absence for a scheduled lesson to forgo paying for the lesson.

Do you offer lessons in the summer?

Yes, I offer piano and voice lessons during the summer months. During this time there are no contracts, so lessons are “come when you wish.”

What days and times are you available for lessons?

Currently, I teach Monday through Thursday. However, this may change depending on the number of enrolled students and the particular scheduling needs of the students.

I can make accommodations for adults wanting to come during the day before school dismissal, either in the late morning or afternoon.

Where should I park?

Although street parking is available, I leave my driveway open for clients.

As a parent, do I stay during the lesson?

My music studio is located in the lower level of my home.  Parents and students enter the studio directly through a separate entrance.  There is a sitting area adjacent to the studio where parents can wait. Most parents opt to wait in their cars.

What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?

A phone message, text, or email can be sent to me to cancel a lesson.

Can I reschedule my lesson?

Yes, if certain criteria are met.

Makeup Lesson Policy: To qualify for a makeup lesson, please give at least 48-hours’ notice, but not less than 24-hours’ notice, except in the event of a bona-fide emergency or a sudden onset of sickness.

If your child has been home sick for several days, the 24-hour minimum cancellation window applies.

Regularly scheduled lessons for the studio year will conclude on May 29, 2025.  However, there will be makeup days available through June 6, 2025.  June 6 is the final day that any lessons can be made up.

What is the best way to contact you?

Emails and phone calls are best.

Email: kabsings@gmail.com

Phone: 703-508-8935

What happens if I need to break my contract?

Sometimes families need to end their contract earlier than anticipated.

If this happens, parents are given 2 options during the year to break the contract without penalty. Option #1: when a contract is initially signed, a parent has the option of breaking the contract after one month of lessons, with no continuing financial obligation for the rest of the scheduled lessons for the school year. The only non-refundable fee is 50% of the annual studio fee. Option #2: if the parent chooses to stop lessons after the first semester and gives notice of their intent by the date stated in the contract, there is no continuing obligation for the second semester of lesson fees. The only non-refundable fee is the annual studio fee.

I strive to be both professional and fair in all of my dealings with my students and their parents.

Free 30 Minute Session Info

I offer free 30 minute sessions during which time the prospective student and parents or adult student and I meet for the following purposes:

1.  I explain my studio policies to the parent and student, or to the adult seeking lessons, and I answer any questions that they may have.  I also ask students what their objectives are for studying piano and/or voice.

2.  For young, beginning students, I take some of the time to test the student to see if they are ready for piano lessons and/or voice lessons.  PIANO: For older students or ones who have already studied with another teacher, I do an assessment of their skill level by either teaching them something from an appropriate level book or (if they have already taken some lessons with another teacher), I have them play a piece for me.  VOICE: I demonstrate a few vocal exercises and have the prospective singer run through the exercises so I can assess their needs and current skill level.  Then I usually ask them to sing a song for me.

Again, for both piano and voice, my goal in the complimentary session is twofold:  an assessment of the student's readiness, current abilities, and skill level, and a short demonstration of how I teach. It is important for both the student and me to assess for ourselves whether we have a good "fit" for working together.

The 30 minute free session is an introductory, assessment time, not an actual lesson or class.
