35+ Years Teaching Voice & Piano Lessons Degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Manhattan School of Music

As a child, I began piano lessons at age 8 and voice lessons at age 14. My desire was to become a renowned opera singer.

Upon graduation from high school, I went to the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore where I received a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice with a minor in Piano. After a year’s hiatus, I moved to New York City where I received a Master of Music degree in Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

I began my voice teaching career directly after graduation from Manhattan School of Music with adjunct positions at the King’s College and Nyack College, both in upstate New York. Other adjunct positions in voice followed at Point Loma College in California and Washington Bible College in Maryland. My home studio voice instruction has spanned many years with a variety of students of all ages.

Although I studied piano for many years, I never aspired to be a concert pianist. When I decided to add piano lessons to my studio 20+ years ago, I first enrolled in a piano pedagogy course at George Mason University so that I could be more fully prepared to teach. Ever since then, I have been busily engaged as a piano teacher, both in my home studio and at two schools in Arlington in their extended day programs.

My singing career has included the following: I have had professional engagements in leading roles with local opera companies; with churches as a soloist; in art song and sacred recitals; at weddings and funerals; and in various other capacities. I have presented my testimony in song at several churches and at Sing-Sing Prison.

I always thought that my supreme goal in life was to be an opera singer. However, a voice pedagogy course at Peabody Conservatory revealed to me that I had a genuine love of teaching! Working with my two students and seeing them grow in their vocal abilities and self-confidence gave me a special joy, one that I then also experienced when I began teaching piano.

Over my many years of teaching, I have realized that I have been given a gift for teaching voice and piano. This gift has enabled me to experience much satisfaction in my work. A number of students have studied with me from early ages right through their graduations from high school.

It has been a privilege for me to have a part in my students’ formative years. It is my hope that my students know that I support them and value them, not only for the skills they acquire, but more importantly because of who they are as unique and wonderful individuals!
